They thought they could do it from their garages, then scaled from 2 to 18 nonprofits in one year

The problem

A brand-new nonprofit unsure if garage operations could work; needed a central location with loading docks for bulk orders and pallet deliveries.

The solution

Flexible warehouse space with built-in shelving, 24/7 access, loading docks, and the ability to scale up or down.

The results

Grew from 2 to 18 nonprofits served; upgraded from the smallest to a medium unit in 3 months; all-inclusive pricing simplifying budget forecasting.

Kristie Thibodeau co-founded Bridge to Basics in spring 2024, flipping the food-bank concept to hygiene products that federal programs don't cover. The garage idea lasted about as long as it took to realize they'd be receiving pallet deliveries. One year later, they serve 18 nonprofits across the Twin Cities from a WareSpace facility they've already outgrown once.

Before WareSpace: when garages won't cut it

Bridge to Basics considered running operations from home garages, but they'd be ordering from wholesalers and receiving bulk shipments on pallets, and needed a central location accessible to nonprofits across four metro counties.

A friend in commercial real estate found that traditional warehouse space was unaffordable and required commitments a brand-new nonprofit couldn't make, then suggested co-warehousing. A quick search turned up WareSpace.

We thought after researching the way some others were doing it, that maybe we could do it out of one of our homes' garages. But we quickly knew that that was not going to be the case.

Making the switch: finding flexibility to grow

WareSpace St. Paul provided the infrastructure from day one: a central location, loading docks for Amazon packages and multi-pallet wholesale orders, and built-in shelving that eliminated a capital expense they couldn't afford.

Their GM, Mike, accommodated their requests while helping them figure out logistics, 24/7 access fit volunteer schedules, and conference rooms now host quarterly board meetings on-site.

Where they are now: scaling without stress

Bridge to Basics started in the smallest unit, outgrew it within three months, and is outgrowing the current medium space too. The flexible structure lets them lease additional space temporarily when bulk donations arrive.

The organization grew from supporting 2 nonprofits to more than 18, with all-inclusive pricing simplifying budget management for an organization forecasting donor funds.

The flexibility that WareSpace offers here is life-changing for our work because we can scale up, we can expand for a short term, we can contract if we need to, so it's just been wonderful to help us kind of grow and adapt.
